----
The principal disadvantage of biodiesel, ethanol, or methanol is that the oil companies will still be able to manage the fuel infrastructure. Hence, those fuels will not be able to free us from being controlled by those corporations.
*
This is why I like electric, or solar electric, as the best options.
*
I drive an electric vehicle right now. I bought it used from eBay for just $2000, and spent another $2000 fixing it up. It does freeway speeds, gets me to and from work just fine, and the electricity cost is only about a penny per mile. If I put up a solar panel, this cost would drop even further. No other alt-fuel option can beat this fuel price advantage.
*
Join me! My EV was a fun project, and has got me profiled in my newspaper, and into local parades. You could do this too, and SMILE, like I do, when I drive past the long lines and high prices at gas stations. Check out this link:

If you're talking about a 10 to 30 year commitment, then you don't want to invest in individual stocks. What you need is a mutual fund. Ask yourself why you want to invest specifically in solar energy. Do you have some kind of vested interest? It may seem the wave of the future but everything moves in cycles. Just look for mutual funds that have proven records and highest returns.

Get into the ETFs that focus on " alternative energy"
A couple of them are : PBW and GEX
They should show decent returns in the next 6 to 9 months...and as a long-term hold, they just make a lot of sense. Germany and other parts of Europe and even China are snapping up alternative energy sources.
